Moving Slow, Power.

I'm moving pretty slow today.  Was a little dull this morning and took about 1/2 a dose of meclizine.  Probably a mistake.  No I'm not acutely dizzy, but.

Power is still out 36+ hours later.  Cobb Mountain which is well to the north west of us had a windy night.  Gusts up to 20mph.  Our local mountain Cow Mountain, had gusts up to 15 miles an hour last night.  Neither of these numbers strike me as being particularly dangerous.

Edit: I had just filled the generator, which lasts for 7+ hours, when I saw a helicopter overhead very low.  It was clearly flying the power lines. Helicopters mean the power will be coming on soon, and indeed it has; 37 1/2 hours after it went out. The outage was scheduled to go for another full day.  I'm going to let the generator stay on until it is empty as it has regular gas in it which won't store well average shelf life 2 to 3 months at best. When it is empty I'll fill it with Tool Gas which will last for up to a couple of years or until the power gets turned off again.

PG&E, ETS Event

For reasons that are completely beyond me, our power company, PG&E, (whom I loath) has chosen to shut off the power.  Yes we are in a Red Flag warning, for low humidity, and high winds.  The danger is real, it is extraordinarily dry out here, BUT.  There is almost no wind. Right now I'm getting the gentlest of air flow through the open door, and that is after a long period of still air.  The highest "wind" I saw on the mountaintop monitors was 12 mph.  But the power has been off to a thousand people in my county for almost 24 hours and is not expected to be back on for a couple of days.  Look, I fully support shutting the power down WHEN THERE IS A PROBLEM!  Shutting it off for a nonexistent problem just makes me more determined to take my place fully off grid.  This is 2026, if needed there are sensors which should allow a big utility to shut off power quickly.  Amazingly even a human monitor could make that call!
I hasten to say we are fine. My little Honda generator is humming away powering: the refrigerator, the freezer, the internet and a device charging plug.  I have a battery powered, solar charged light next to me giving enough light to see by.  The stove is propane so we can cook. So is the water heater.  So the only things we are really missing are the microwave, the washing machine and a few overhead lights.

I have canceled the weekend event.  Probably for the best as I'm still not feeling quite well.  I did get some medicine, meclizine. Meclizine is sometimes sold as Dramamine. I took slightly less than 1/4 of a dose to start, which didn't make me drowsy, but did seem to help a little.  Tomorrow I'll brave a larger dose if needed.

Very slowly recovering from the Vertigo episodes.  It has been helpful to talk to a couple of other people who have had them and can talk about the experience. Need to get some of the medications that were prescribed.  It is dawning on me that I now really want the security of a medicine that will allow me to function well enough to get home if I have an episode.  Sigh.

I don't think this weekend's ETS competition event will have enough people signed up to be able to go forward. Currently I have two people signed up.  One is in both events on Sunday  and the other is in one event on Saturday.  I know of two or three people who have said they were coming, but even with them it isn't enough.  I need 8 to 10 riders in each of the four events to break even.

The garden is slowing down as the fall advances.  Got two more nice butternut squashes today.

Over the last two or three days a lot of bookkeeping has gotten done.  Usually by this time in the fall I'm much more mentally clear (summer is full of allergies) and ready to catch up on all the summer backlog.  Every year I vow that I will keep up with the bookkeeping instead of falling behind....
Fall is when ALL of my big bills come in.  It starts with the annual (or bi-annual) hay purchase, moves on to annual insurance payments and ends with land taxes.  Bank accounts that had been looking plump drain away.  Sigh.  There shouldn't be any real surprises this year so it's all under control.  I've even found, and scanned, the bank statements that the stupid auditor wants.  What a nightmare that is.  The insurance company hires an outside vendor to audit accounts.  The outside vendor has set up a portal that you can export your Quick Books or other accounting software to.  I don't use accounting software.  I'm WAY too small. I use nice, old fashioned spreadsheets.  My CPA accepts spreadsheets, especially nice orderly ones that give totals across the top.  The audit folks?  No way.  Apparently you can lie on spreadsheets but not on accounting software?  So I copy my bank statements. Statements that don't always reflect cash income that IS reflected on my spreadsheets.   Can I send them to the auditor?  No, I cannot, that would be improper.  What I can do is send them to my long suffering Agent, so SHE can email them to the auditor.   Every year I rather feel like I have stepped through the looking glass with Alice.

Had a nice conversation with Lori at Rainbow Ag about possibly hosting an informational event with them.
Am expecting Mark O at 8:30 tomorrow morning to do some work, so had better get off to bed now.

Vertigo

I've been down with a nasty case of Vertigo since Tuesday.  Got dizzy while working at Disaster Relief.  Tue morning. Came home and had acute nausea for a while. Wed was better, Thursday felt almost normal until the evening when there was another round of everything being really nasty.  Spent two days in bed, mostly with my eyes closed, and yesterday at the hospital where they VERY SLOWLY ruled out a stroke.  Vertigo almost always has a component of inner ear distress, irritation, infection or loose calcium crystals. Yes the ear hurts a bit. Apparently no real infection.

Before all this started I did order some new, custom, tarps.  One for the splitter since its cover is beyond repair.  One for the tractor because it needs something. Three for the carport.  One for the long side which will fit instead of being rolled up on the ground. One for 1/2+ of the front, and the last to cover the front in real rainstorms instead of letting the Gator block most of the rain.  Should make life MUCH easier.

Off to stagger around the garden and let Firefly out for a bit.

It's only been... okay, I don't want to think how long.

We are preparing to take the beta update page and the beta inbox out of beta with the next code release. We don't have an exact date yet, but this is your last chance to tell us about problems!

To enable the beta versions: go to Beta Features and enable the "new Create Entries" beta test for the new update page and the "New Inbox Page" for the, well, new inbox page.

If this is your first time using the beta update page: nearly everything on it can be adjusted, moved, or removed to some degree. The upper right side of the update form has a " ⚙️ Rearrange Panels" link.

Not every panel is enabled by default! If you don't see something you're used to finding, look in the disabled panels. While in Rearrange mode, you can enable or disable panels, drag them to whatever position you want, and generally customize it to your heart's content.

Once we push the button and switch to the new update and inbox pages for everyone, we cannot keep the old ones available. We are so close to finishing the decade-long "get rid of the undocumented custom templating language from 1996 that no one else uses" modernization project that's been sapping our collective will to live that we can taste it, and we can't convert the old update page and the updated inbox page is the converted version. This is your last chance to alert us of problems. If you let us know after the switch goes live, we'll still fix it, but we can't guarantee how fast. Prevent future problems and test drive them now!

Hi all,

I had to push some code live today to fix something, and that brought with it a couple of new things like if you have two-factor authentication (2FA/MFA) enabled, you got automatically logged out and it is now required to log in. If you don't, you can set it up if you want (you don't have to.)

This also means that if you have 2FA enabled, you will not be able to use 3P clients using your username and password anymore. You should be able to use API keys in most cases, but there's some nuance to that (and tbh, I just am not precisely sure what clients anybody even uses.)

Please do comment if you're seeing anything weird, as per usual, and we'll work on it. Thank you!
